In a letter to the editor of the Des Moines Register, Bill Cox of Urbandale wrote:
In his Oct. 20 guest essay, “Iowa’s Clean-Energy Leadership Is Needed for State, the Nation,” retired Vice Admiral Dennis McGinn cited the tragedy of losing troops to protect supply convoys. In his followup address at Drake University, he described the transformation of a forward Marine company that replaced diesel generators with solar cells made in Iowa.
McGinn is a battle-hardened, high level realist who recognizes the connection between national security, global climate change, economic security and fossil fuel dependence. Climate change is sparking security risks by causing severe weather events that are destroying food sources and destabilizing entire countries.
With experience, responsibility and vision, McGinn strongly encouraged us to prudently examine our energy needs and move toward sustainable renewable sources. Every presidential candidate should follow McGinn’s sage advice and seriously address this critical issue.
